BBQ’s make everyone happy! 06/29/2011

Last weekend I went up to Petawawa to spend time with Sean and Bella!

Here’s what we did:

Friday night: We were invited to Noel and Krystal’s for dinner and drinks. We ordered in from pizza pizza because they have gluten-free crusts for yours truly! It was pretty good; chicken, mozzarella and spinach. I set my bed time at 10pm… that did not happen; it was more like midnight.

Saturday: Sean and I puttered around Canadian Tire and Home Depot and I got Sean an early birthday present. Luck guy! We were walking by the BBQ section and buying some cedar planks  to cook salmon on and he saw a beautiful bright red charcoal BBQ. Simple but spunky. I thought it was great when he mentioned that his dad used to use a charcoal BBQ. I’m a sucker for old family stories and memories.

We also watched the last Harry Potter movie that came out. I love the series so thought is was great!! Can’t wait for the very last movie that comes out 2 days before my 30th!

Saturday night: After all the charcoal BBQ talk we had to test it out so we grilled up some chicken and vegetables in a grill basket. It was so delicious and the taste was definitely different than a regular propane BBQ. I think it’s a really nice change.

Sunday: I did a very slow 15km on a very hot and humid Sunday morning. I’m not sure why but my runs seem harder in Petawawa… I’ll have to look into this.

After my run we decided to take a walk to some rapids near by just along a park side. Sean got Bella’s back pack on and we headed out into the sun. It was a very wonderful afternoon and sadly afterwards it was time for me to get moving for my three hour drive.

Last night I was invited to have brochette’s at my brother’s house with his girlfriend Jenn.

Who could pass that up!! There may have been a beer or two on the side.

It was a great evening of chatting, catching up and talking about more to come for the summer.

Oh; they have a “crog”…. looks so very innocent and cute but they swear it’s full of trickery! Poor little cat.

This morning’s breakfast was a gluten-free english muffin (courtesy of my wonderful mum) with almond butter and sliced banana. So delicious.

Of course it was accompanied by the usual cup of coffee. I may have also filled a “go mug” for the ride to work. Okay, I’m not gonna lie; I always bring more coffee to work. Come on, it’s a 1/2 hour ride!

The rain keeps coming and it’s here for the weekend if the weather people got it right; Somehow listening to everyone complain about how much it’s raining makes me actually appreciate it. Everything looks clean and shiny… I like the sound of it; yeah it’s pretty much alright with me.

This morning when I woke up the sheets on my bed were tangled.

That usually never happens.

I’m one of those people that goes to sleep at night and when I wake up in the morning I can fold over the covers; slide off the mattress and fold back the covers and the bed is instantly made. Really kind of a great start to the day… every day.

Not this morning!

Something I should mention… I’ve been living at my mum’s house for the past 6 1/2 months. After spending the last 12 years on my own I’m back. I also have a house for sale in Lansdowne Ontario that’s got all of my possessions held captive. I miss my space!

Strawberry Rhubarb Pie

Can I just say….. when I got home it smelt like summer and I soon realized this is why!

My mum made PIE! Sweet!

Strawberry Rhubarb Pie

2 cups cubed rhubarb

2 cups strawberries

1 – 10 inch pie crust

1 1/2 cups granulated sugar (I tend to use about a cup)

1/3 all-purpose flour (or gluten-free all-purpose – or rice flour)

1/3 cup sour cream (I’ve used vanilla yogurt before and eliminated almost all of the sugar)

For the crumble on top

1/2 cup of all-purpose flour (or gluten-free as above)

1/2 cup of brown sugar

1/4 cup soft butter or margarine

1. In mixing bowl combine rhubarb, strawberries, sugar, flour and sour cream.

2. Pour into pie crust

3. combine ingredients for topping and crumble over top.

4. Bake at 450 for 15 minutes. Then at 350 for another 30-40 minutes.
